OI: 8. mesto v razredu zvezda OG: 8th place in star class

Mario Fafangel became the first Olympian from the former Yugoslavia to compete in a sailing competition, when he joined Karl Bušić in a home-made boat at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. Born on the island of Rab, Fafangel eventually moved to Koper, where he would start competing with Janko Kosmina. The pair took part in the star class regatta at the 1960 Olympics, finishing 8th, which would rank as Slovenia’s best Olympic sailing achievement for 44 years. The pioneers of Slovenian Olympic sailing subsequently racked up a number noteworthy achievements in regattas around Europe and the Mediterranenan in their boat Cha-Cha. They confirmed their world-class talent in 1961 by dominating the leading European competition on Lago de Garda.
