Mateja Svet made a mark in skiing at the age of 16 by winning the giant slalom at the World Youth Championships. On 8 February 1986, she would make history by becoming the first Slovenian woman to win a World Cup race, when she dominated the giant slalom meet in Visoke Tatre. She went on to shine at the World Championships in Crans Montana in 1987 with three medals, before bagging silver in the slalom at the 1988 Calgary Olympics, finishing behind only the Swiss legend Vreni Schneider. But she would defeat Schneider in the same event at the 1989 World Championships in Vail to take gold. After her seventh competitive season, Svet called it quits at the age of 22, leaving thousands of her fans in shock. She returned to her studies, gave birth to daughter Tara in 1998, and continued life working as an occupational therapist.
