The Ljubljana-born Tepeš developed into a world-class jumper as a member of the SSK Ilirija club before moving to SD Dolomiti. He achieved his best results in the second half of the 1980s. After making his Olympic début in 1980 in Lake Placid, he steadily carved his way into the elite of international ski jumping. Standing out as the highlights  of his career are the 1985 World Champion- ships in Planica and the 1988 Olympics in Calgary. In Canada he missed out on the bronze medal in the individual competition by the smallest of margins, but he went on to make an important contribution to the silver medal won by the Yugoslav team which also comprised Primož Ulaga, Matjaž Debelak and Matjaž Zupan. In World Cup meets, Tepeš was 2nd six times and 3rd twice.
