Tone Cerer made the swimming pool in the town of Kamnik his second home during his youth. He took part in his first competition in 1934. Initially competing in the freestyle, he would later become one of the finest breaststroke swimmers in the world. His first major international success was a bronze medal at the 1938 European Championships, an achievement he would go on to repeat nine years later. Following the end of World War II, Cerer showed he was a world-class talent, as he took 5th place at the 1948 Olympics in London. The last major success of his career, during which he dominated the breaststroke competition in Yugoslavia, was 6th place at the 1950 European Championships. Cerer continued swimming in senior competitions after emigrating to the US in 1956. He would make occasional returns to Kamnik before his death in Cleveland in 2006.
