Janez Polda was part of a generation who had the best years of their athletic development cut short by World War II. The world will never know what Polda and his generation could have achieved in different circumstances. Polda shot to prominence at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, where he surprised the field by setting the longest mark of the competition at 71 metres. Unfortunately for him, he failed to stick the landing. The same year he set a national record of 109 metres and flew as far as 120 metres with a scratched landing in Planica. He cemented his place as a Slovenian sports legend in 1950, when he set a new national record of 114 metres in Planica and also set a new long mark on a standard hill (86 metres). Polda racked up a host of top-flight achievements in international competitions, including a win in the prestigious Kongsberg Cup in 1955.
