OI: 8. mesto (1960) OG: 8th place (1960)

Janez Žirovnik was a pioneer of Slovenian road cycling. During his prime racing days in the 1950s and early 1960s, he won the Tour of Yugoslavia and was a two-time national champion. The highlight of his career was an 8th place in the road race at the 1960 Rome Olympics. He joined the Rog club from Ljubljana and became the closest thing to a professional cyclist in Slovenia at the time. A hard worker with excellent tactical skills, he was the icon of the Ljubljana club for many years. Together with Alojz Bajc, Jože Šibenik and Janez Valant, he paved the way to Slovenian domination of Yugoslav cycling and the breakthrough among European and world elite that would be continued by the likes of Rudi Valenčič, Franc Škerl, Andrej Boltežar, Primož Čerin and Andrej Hauptman.
