Slovenia’s most famous Olympian began his career in Sokol Novo mesto and made his international debut at the World Championships 1922 in Ljubljana. The highlight of Štukelj’s career were the two gold medals won at the Olympic Games in Paris 1924, when he finished top in the all-around and the horizontal bar events. He enjoyed more Olympic success four years later in Amsterdam, but unfortunately did not compete at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin he took silver in the rings event. He also won medals at the World Championships in Lyon in 1926 and Luxembourg in 1930, as well as at the 50th anniversary of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) in 1931 in Paris (1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze). Štukelj obtained a law degree in 1924 and signed the Slovenian Olympic Charter on 15 October 1991. He spent most of his life with his family in Maribor.
