The best Slovene tennis player of all time, Maribor-born Mima Jaušovec, began her illustrious career at age 13 by winning the Yugoslav national titles in the girls, junior and main event competitions. In 1973 she became the first European to win the unofficial junior World Championships (the Orange Bowl in Florida), which she followed up with the junior title at the French Open and, a year later, in Wimbledon. She holds the distinction of being the only Slovene to win a main event Grand Slam Tournament, as she won the 1977 French Open. Together with Virginia Ruzici from Romania, she also won the doubles competition in Paris and reached the finals in Wimbledon in 1978. She reached a best ranking of 6th in the world on 22 March 1982. Jaušovec won Slovene Female Athlete of the Year honours four times and was twice Yugoslav Female Athlete of the Year.
