Rodolf Cvetko was the first Slovenian to win an Olympic medal, when he won silver in the sabre event as a competitor for the Austrian team at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. A perennial Austrian champion, sabre instructor at the Military Institute in Wiener Neustadt and a winner of four medals at the 1911 European Championships (individual and team competition with sabre and foil), Cvetko never competed in individual events at the Olympics. His career was halted by World War I, but he remained faithful to fencing throughout his life. He was one of the founders of the Yugoslav and Slovenian fencing associations and worked as a fencing referee and coach. After World War II he became a fencing instructor at the Acting Academy and at the Physical Education Institute in Ljubljana, which would go on to become the Faculty of Sports.
