Najboljši slovenski košarkar vseh časov je košarko vzljubil v rojstnem Mariboru, že s 14 leti pa je zaigral v prvem moštvu Branika. Športno pot je nadaljeval v AŠK Olimpija in v obdobju 1956 – 1970 prispeval levji delež k osvojitvi 6 državnih naslovov. V tem obdobju je bil tudi nepogrešljiv član in dolgoletni kapetan reprezentance Jugoslavije (skupaj 206 nastopov) na treh OI in SP ter šestih EP. Na SP 1967 v Montevideu (Urugvaj) so ga razglasili za najboljšega igralca šampionata, gostitelji pa so ga počastili z vzdevkom »El Grande Daneu«. Veliko in trdo je treniral in nikoli se ni predal. Razvil je domala nezaustavljiv met – »polhorog«. Vabili so ga tudi na tuje, v Italijo in Real Madrid, športnik leta Jugoslavije (1967) in Slovenije (1969) pa je raje ostal v domovini.
Slovenia’s best basketball player of all times fell in love with basketball in his place of birth Maribor, he started playing for the local club Branik at age 14. He than moved to AŠK Olimpija in Ljubljana and between the years 1956 and 1970 contributed vastly to winning six national titles with the club. In this period he was also a very important member and a long-term captain of the Yugoslav national team (206 games altogether) playing at three Olympic Games and World Championships and six European Championships. At the 1967 World Championships in Montevideo (Uruguay) he was proclaimed MVP of the tournament and named “El Grande Daneu” by the hosts. He trained a lot and very hard and never gave up. He was famous for his throw – semi hook shot. He was invited to play abroad – Italy, Real Madrid but Athlete of the year in Yugoslavia (1967) and Slovenia (1969) rather stayed in Slovenia.
