Aljoša Žorga fell in love with basketball in primary school. Helped by a growth spurt in high school, he would become a major talent at 200 centimetres. He gained respect of national team coaches soon after joining Olimpija of Ljubljana and made his debut for the Yugoslav junior team in 1965. Playing alongside the likes of Krešimir Čosić, Damir Šolman, Ljubodrag Simović and Bogdan Tanjević, Žorga won the silver medal at the Junior European Championships and gold at the Balkan Championships. He would go on to become a regular member of the Yugoslav men’s team, playing 80 games, during which he won the 1970 World Championships in Ljubljana and silver medals at the 1968 Olympics in Ciudad de Mexico and 1971 European Championships. He was also a member of the Olimpija team which won the Yugoslav champions in 1970.
