Ciril Praček was the one who put Slovenia on the international alpine skiing map. Already in 1933 he was among the participants of the second ever World Championships. His 7h place slalom finish at the World Championships in Zakopane in 1939 set a milestone that remained an important reference to new generations of Slovenian skiers for decades to follow. In Poland he managed to get the better of all his Austrian, French and Italian rivals. Praček participated at two Olympics – in 1936 (15th in the combined event) and in 1948. The war also interfered drastically with the sports career of this self-taught skier, mountaineer and mountain rescuer. In what was the pioneering era of Slovenian skiing, he was practically the only one to deal with skiing theory and also published prolifically. Even in his 80s he continued to share his extensive knowledge and experience with the young.
