Nekdaj odlični spustaš na divjih vodah je v 17 let dolgi tekmovalni karieri pobiral odličja na največjih tekmovanjih. Na svetovnih prvenstvih je med posamezniki osvojil po eno kolajno: zlat je bil v Frostburgu, srebrn v Mezzani in bronast v Bovcu. Še več lovorik si je nabral v ekipni konkurenci. Pred koncem tekmovalne kariere se je že posvetil trenerskemu delu v KKK Ljubljana, nato pa kot trener vodil mladinsko izbrano vrsto v spustu in slalomu ter člansko slalomsko reprezentanco. Za svoje uspehe in delo je prejel številna priznanja, med drugim Bloudkovo plaketo in nagrado ter priznanje za najboljšega slovenskega športnika leta 1989. Deloval je in še deluje v nekaterih strokovnih združenjih in organizacijah. Je direktor reprezentanc pri KZS, bil je član strokovnega sveta KZS, član strokovnega sveta Športne zveze Ljubljana in član strokovnega sveta za šport RS.

During his 17-year career in white water competitions, Andrej Jelenc collected a host of medals at the biggest international competitions. In individual events at World hampionships, he won one each of the medal colours: gold in Frostburg, silver in Mezzani and bronze in Bovec. He collected even more medals in the team events. Before finishing his career, he took up coaching at the Kayak and Canoe Club Ljubljana and subsequently became the coach of the youth team in white water and slalom events. He received numerous honours for his achievements, including the Bloudek Award and Distinction and the Athlete of the Year Award in 1989. He continues to work in professional associations today, including as the team director at the Kayak Association of Slovenia and a member of the Government Expert Council for Sport.
