The Kranj-born Bojan Ropret decided at the age of 16 to switch from mountaineering to cycling. Guided by coach of the Sava cycling club Franc Hvasti, Ropret won his first race only a few months later. He went on to collect more than 50 wins, including at a number of presti-gious races in Yugoslavia, the Adriatic and the Mediterranean Games in Casablanca. He also won more than 30 national titles. The ”Kranj Locomotive” was often labelled a smart cyclist because of his clever approach to cycling and a touch tactical racing. He was also considered an all-around cyclist, who fared just as well in the time trials as he did in the climbs. Ropret was most of all a fighter, who would find some extra energy for the finish line sprint before collapsing of exhaustion. Never becoming a professional, Ropret retired in August 1986.
