Boris Strel will go down into the history of Slovenian skiing as the first winner of a medal at a major competition with his bronze in the giant slalom at the 1982 World Championships in Schladming. The Kranj-native competed in a time when skiing gained top following in Slovenia and skiers were treated like heroes. During his prime, Strel ranked as one of the best giant slalom competitors in the world and was often in touch with even the biggest names, including Swede Ingemar Stenmark. He was in many ways a trailblazer and innovator, perfecting a style that is still in use in the giant slalom today. Most of all, he showed his best at major competitions. He also holds the distinction of being the first Slovenian to win a World Cup meet (in 1981 in Cortina d’Ampezzo). Strel’s skiing career and life in general was fast and furious. He competed in the World Cup for only six seasons before retiring due to a back injury in 1985, at the age of 26. He died young as well, at the age of only 54.
