Born and raised in Kranj, Borut Petrič first rose to prominence in 1975 at the tender age of 14 when he won bronze at the European Youth Swimming Championships in the 1,500 metres freestyle. A year later he won the same competition to punch his ticket to the Olympic Games. Competing in Montreal at the age of 14, years and 325 days, he broke the record for being the youngest Yugoslav Olympian, which still stands today. Petrič was a national champion and record-holder in freestyle, medley and butterfly. His biggest successes came at the 1981 European Championships in Split, where he won gold in the 400 metres freestyle, beating the (almost) invincible Vladimir Salnikov. Petrič set a myriad of national records, including in youth competitions, some of which remained in place for 35 years. His retirement at the age of 23 came as a shock to fans of swimming.
