Jurij Uršič, also known by his Italian name Giorgio Ursi, is the only member of the Slovenian minority in Italy to win an Olympic medal in an individual event. He took up cycling late in his youth, at the age of 18, when he joined the Trieste-based club Bartali Rovis. He became a member of the Olympic cycling team for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics when one of the regular members suffered an injury. Uršič went on to shine in Tokyo, winning a silver medal in the pursuit event. His second and final major achievement came at the 1966 World Amateur Championships in Germany, where he took the bronze medal. No longer inspired by cycling, he decided to retire. He suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 40.
