Despite being born in Istria in Croatia, Vinko Jelovac has been anointed a Ljubljanian and Slovenian athlete due to his performances for Olimpija of Ljubljana over a 15 year career. During his time in Ljubljana, the 208-centimetre giant would develop into one of the finest centres in Europe and the world. He played for Yugoslavia at two Olympic games (winning 1 silver), two World Championships (1 gold and 1 silver) and as five European Championships (3 gold, 2 silver). Jelovac was the top scorer at the 1973 European Championships in Spain. A two-time Slovenian Athlete of the Year (1973, 74), he is also a winner of the Bloudek Prize, the top national honour for achievements in sports. He amassed 240 caps for Yugoslavia before retiring in 1982. Remaining at Olimpija as a coach,  he spearheaded the club’s return to the 1st Yugoslav league.
