Jesenice goalkeeper Tone Gale ranks among the all-time greats of Slovenian ice hockey. He participated in many club successes of Olimpija Ljubljana and was a member of the national team which took 9th place at the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble, which still ranks as Slovenia’s best achievement in Olympic ice hockey competitions. Gale appeared at three consecutive Olympics (Grenoble, Innsbruck in 1964 and Sapporo in 1972) and at nine World Championships. At the World Championships in Graz in 1973 he was hit in the eye by a puck, an injury that forced him to retire. Together with Rudi Hiti, he was one of the first Slovenian ice hockey players to travel to North America in search of work. There he became the first Slovenian to appear for an NHL team, when he took to the ice for the New York Rangers in a preseason match against Boston.
