Peter Šumi began his sports journey at the age of seven as a member of the Sokol movement in Kranj. In 1912 his family moved to Ljubljana, where he continued training as part of Sokol and under the leadership of Viktor Murnik. He was extraordinarily successful at three World Championships, in 1922, 1926 and 1930, bagging a total of 11 medals. For several decades he was the only gymnast to have won the individual combined event at two consecutive World Championships – in Ljubljana in 1922 and in Lyon in 1926. The feat was repeated only in 2006 and 2007 by Chinese gymnast Yang Wei. Šumi participated at Olympic Games only as a judge, in 1928 and 1936. Already in 1920, he and his brother Franc established Vulkan, a company that later developed into tires maker Sava Kranj. Šumi emigrated to Switzerland in 1947. He died in Vienna where he had lived after 1953.
